Welding Wire (While alloys of many of the above metals they are a good source of wire with some unique properties)

 Temper

Wire can come in one of several tempers, which roughly reflect how easy it is to work compared to other tempers of the same metal; soft, quarter hard, half hard, hard extra hard, spring, extra spring. Some metals are inherently stronger than others (like stainless steel compared to copper), so even a soft temper of a harder metal may be harder than a spring temper of a softer metal. Also, not all metals will be available in all temper designations.

 Gauge
Gauge systems are used to assign a number designation to a specific diameter of wire. The two most common gauge systems are American Wire Gauge (AWG) and Imperial Standard Wire Gauge (SWG). Aside from one or two designations at or near either end of the two systems, the two systems do not match up directly. For example, 16AWG is .0508"(1.2903mm) and 16SWG is .064"(1.626mm) but .064" is 14AWG.

While wire is sold by gauge, many times which system isn't specified. When system is not specified, the general rule is that AWG is typically used for non-ferrous (non iron bearing) metals and SWG is generally applied to ferrous (iron bearing) metals. Due to the drawbacks of gauge systems, many maillers take to referring to wire by actual diameter, either in imperial (inches) or metric (millimeters), depending on their country's standard and personal preference.

K- Comments
Nice content....I like having a Metals Homepage like this, getting fleshed out to include brief descriptions of each metal and it's alloys, keeping the alloys to the relative ones, the practical, meaning available in wire form and workable.

I'll work on putting all this into PDF files so we can see what they would look like, and be easily down-loadable and printable......we'll also want sub-pages for each prime metal, listing alloys and properties in a more detailed way. Just my thoughts....the Metals/Materials subject can get pretty involved, but we can edit to keep it relevant.

The sub-pages would be something like:
Steel, non-ferrous, includes Stainless...
Copper, includes all the brasses/bronzes and nickel silver, it being a copper alloy(65% copper)....
Precious, includes silver, the alloys being sterling, Argentium and the others....gold, karat and it's alloys....
Ti/Ni could be together as an elemental group....
Aluminum, it's alloys
Maybe a Super-Alloy page, includes Inconel....
Plated/Filled/Anodized.....??
Alternative, rubber, plastics....

Again, nice work, and great that it's coming along....We've got a custom Domain name you can use, www.maillesmith.com , it comes striaght here, so if you want to link here, the link is something that looks good and makes sense....also if anyone wants to donate, cover a months subscription, it costs $20 a month, they can pay-pal the donation to kodiak@maillesmith.com ........we'll be staying here for the forseeable future I suppose, and it's worth it in my eyes, so I'm covering the fee's at this point....we can always revert to free, and have the ads back if I get in a bind.....Kodiak-

MusicMan

Aspect Ratio

So What's This Aspect Ratio Thing All About?

What is this Aspect Ratio everybody talks about? Why should I bother to learn this? Will this really improve my mailling? All these are good questions and questions most beginning maillers, as well as some intermediate, ask themselves.

First, what is Aspect Ration or AR? Aspect Ratio is the relation between the inner diameter of a ring and the outer diameter of the wire being using. This outer diameter of the wire, commonly referred to as gage, must be converted/translated into either inch or millimeter measurements, and match whatever you have measured the inner diameter (ID) of your rings in. If we mix our measurements things will not work out correctly. These two measurements are all you will need in order to figure out the Aspect Ratio of a ring.

Why should you bother to learn this? Aspect Ratio is a very important concept once you get to more advanced weaves and projects. In fact, some weaves cannot be accomplished if you have the correct Aspect Ratio and if you use the wrong AR in a project it may not turn out. As far as improving your mailling skills, that is debatable, but it will definitely help make your mailling easier. I have talked to many people who don't worry about Aspect Ratio and are fine artisans, but on the other hand I know people who know all about Aspect Ratio, but their actual projects are less than stellar because they have to work on their technique. So, the question I would ask is "Will knowing and understanding Aspect Ration help make mailling easier?" To this I would say, YES! Read on and you will find out not only the formula for figuring out Aspect Ratio, but how to use that information to make your mailling life a little easier.

Three formulas that will help you with Aspect Ration and make your mailling life easier:

AR - Aspect Ratio
ID - Inner Diameter of the Ring
WD - Wire Diameter

Finding the Aspect Ratio

AR = ID / WD

Finding the Correct
Wire Diameter

WD = ID / AR

Finding the Correct Inner Diameter

ID = AR x WD

Now, let us take a look at the process of finding out the AR of the rings you are using. Below is a chart that shows two examples of the process to figure out the Aspect Ration of different rings.

Formula
Used

Plugging numbers put into the formula

Aspect Ratio of the Rings

Large Rings

AR = ID / WD

AR = 9.56 mm / 1.97 mm

4.89

Small Rings

AR = ID / WD

AR = 6.54 mm / 1.54 mm

4.25

As you notice the AR of the two different rings do not vary greatly even though the actual size of the rings do vary greatly. As a reminder this information tells you the relationship between the inner diameter of the ring and the outer diameter of the wire or you that you should be able to fit that many rings side by side inside one ring. The reason that the two AR's are so close is because we used different wire to make the rings.

So what? I can find the AR of a ring, what good does it do me now? - Good question, let's look at a practical application of this information.

Process for figuring out the Aspect Ratio and using that information to complete a New Project

The Situation: Let's say that you made a Celtic Vision Christmas ornament that used the two above ring sizes. You come back to it later and decide that you want to make a smaller version of these same ornaments into earrings for you girlfriend. But, what ring sizes do I need? This is where an understanding of Aspect Ration can help.

The Question: What rings do I need to make this project?

The Problem: I have the wire that I want to use, but do not know what size to make the rings.

The Process:

Find the AR for the old projects rings

Big Rings 9.65 /1.97 = 4.89

Small Rings 6.54 / 1.54 = 4.25

Take the wire for the new project and measure out the diameter of the wire in the units (inches/mm) that you want to use.

Using the AR information from the old project and the wire diameter of the new wire to be used select the correct formula from above to find the new Inner Diameter.

ID of New Big Rings = AR of the Big Rings x New Wire Diameter

ID = 4.89 x .737

3.60 mm = 4.89 x .737

ID of New Small Rings = AR of the Small Rings x New Wire Diameter

ID = 4.25 x .636

2.7 mm = 4.25 x .636

Now find the appropriate mandrel to make the needed new ID (make sure to take into consideration the springback of the wire used)

Wind and Cut your new rings

You now have the appropriate ring sizes to make your earrings

From This

To This

Note: This process can also be used if you know what size rings / mandrel you will use and need to know what type of wire to buy, you just need to select the correct formula from above.

This is just one example of why it is important to have an understanding of Aspect Ration. Some weaves cannot be accomplished if the rings have the wrong Aspect Ration, some projects can look totally different depending on the Aspect Ratio that is used. These are just a few of the ways a small thing like AR can make your mailling easier, more enjoyable and possibly even more profitable.

***I would like to put in a thank you to Legba3 of Corvus Chainmaille who provided these three formula's to me when I was learning about Aspect Ratio. After you showed me these I finally started to understand how useful AR and the related information could be. Thanks.

E 4-1 Dice Bag

E4-1 Dice Bag / Coin Purse

The E4-1 dice bag is a great beginner project and introduces the beginning mailler to many different concepts including the basic European 4-1 weave and expanding and contracting in the European 4-1 weave to create a circle.

For my first big project I used 14 g galvanized steel and wound it around a 3/8 metal mandrel. So for the sake of nostalgia I will use those rings for this project.

Before we get into the actual project I want to talk about two techniques that will become extremely important: Contraction and Expansion in relation to creating a circle.

Expansion - is the technique of adding more rings in the last row of maille to allow the circle being created to grow.

Contraction - is the technique of taking away rings from the last row of maille, causing the circle to become smaller.

Creating your Bag

Add 8 rings to one ring. Everyone have a great Thanksgiving and Christmas. K-

Ads are gone again....if anyone wants to contribute to the cause, message Musicman or Kodiak-

9-23-09 We are in the process of re-establishing the project and trying to finish up the rough draft. Personally, I would love to see content portion of the book get finish by the end of the year and than take next couple of months to edit and find out where we have holes. There is a great deal of discussion that still needs to go on about content, the finalized look of the book, etc. Please continue to add content when and where you can (add in the Rough Draft section to the left), start a discussion you think needs discussing and give your opinions. This has great potential and we have a great group of people working on this project.

 9-13-09 Wow it's been a while! I know for a lot of people, "school has happened", but I'm hoping we can try to get the ball rolling on this project again. Since I've been absent from this scene, as well as the chainmaille scene as a whole, the only skills I can really give right now are proofreading and editing. I've been going around and editing some stuff, making it look better, that kind of thing. So, since that's what I'm good at, I'd like to ask you guys to contribute whichever skills you're good with. If you're good at taking the step-by-step pictures, but not the layout and writing part, please contribute what you have, it will be a great benefit to those of us who don't have that kind of skill, or like me, the supplies to make chainmaille anymore. The store I used to go to to get wire no longer supplies it so I've been at a loss as how to get some afforably, and, like I said, my skill in chainmaille has atrophied. Thanks!!! -NinjaTails

3-16-09 Well, I've got rid of the ads, don't know if I'll keep it going paying here, like I said below, we may move to a better, full function, lower priced wiki....let me know your thoughts....please? The background can be changed anytime.....Yeah, this works better...something that was pissing me off, was the navbar on the left there, always shortened up and ads there....now, just pull the bottom of the menu down, and it'll stay.....Kodiak-

 Reply from NT: Oh, yikes. I never liked the idea of paying for a wiki, but I guess having "ninjatails" added to the name doesn't sound very chainmaille-like. We just moved here though and things are going smoothly, so I don't know. maybe we should have a vote on it?

3-11-09
Gem Show finally past, yea! I'll be first doing some converting and saving to PDF and .doc files, pages that have quite a bit of content on them....these files will be at the bottom of the related pages, and folks will be able to download and open, print, whatever, save if they'd like.
I'm still looking at upgrading to remove the ads, and may fool around with the background.....price is an issue, as well as features, and I'm also looking into some other options for wiki hosters. Kodiak-

2/10/09 ~
Hey MusicMan, sure glad you've been keeping an ember going here, and Xander too....time for us slackers to get to blowing on it though maybe? I've got my Rock Clubs promo responsibilities that'll have me busy until after March 9th, but I'm always here, checking a few times a day, and will make time to at least throw a comment or two in the mix....I think we all have stuff we'd like to get put into this, but finding to time and opportunity to collaborate, for me anyway, sometimes takes a back seat to life, as usual.
12/23/08 ~
Merry Christmas all, hope everyone's healthy and happy....we'll get back to this in 2009, you'll see....thanks to MusicMan, Bors and MaxumX, we've had some really nice work done there in the last few months, but then we've all put some kind of mark here, it won't get lost.....don't get discouraged, we'll get back on it....take care, and best wishes for the season.....Kodiak-
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Thursday, 27 November, 2008 - Great things have been happening lately on the site. We have some new tutorials up with some more on the way, more information has been appearing weekly and we have been having some good discussions! Things are really starting to come together and people are starting to ask the questions that will help to shape this project into a great book.

On this Thanksgiving I would like to say that I am thankful for all of you, my friends all over the world. I have learned a great deal from all of you and I have been greatly encouraged by how everybody has been working together. I hope that all of your holiday planning and projects go smoothly. - MusicMan

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Saturday, 11-08-08 - I like what I'm seeing!!! I also noticed that at the end of each week, a message called "The 2009 Chainmaille Book Project Weekly Digest" is sent out, or at least it is to me. That being said, instead of having to go around to see what's happened, you can just wait until the end of the week to see for yourself :P Nice feature, I might say, and for that I'm glad Kodak has started the wiki here. I know I haven't been doing my job--I have way too many things going on right now, to be honest, and when I re-jump-started this project I didn't know that it would get hectic all the sudden (Which is to say: SORRY!!!)
Nevertheless, I still see great progress here. Thanks guys, you rock! -NinjaTails
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday 10-28 ~ Just a note to say it all looks good, we're making slow progress, and that's what it'll be, slow. Hope we all are OK with the pace. There's a bunch to think about, what to add, where and how much....it's gonna take patience, but I think in a few months time, it'll be a whole lot different looking....once a week or so, take a look at the arrangement and organization of the individual pages, make suggestions or just move things around a bit to help the content/topics flow nicely...it'll feel more natural, have a better feel to it as we go along.K-
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
10-25-08

How bout this, kind of blog this, I suppose...we can put a dbl line chart edit to separate the days, keepmg the current day on top.K-
I've done a bit of re-arranging, added pages and we've got a new comrad, Bors from MAIL, but he found that someone already that name, so, mgw906 be his name. I think we can still call hin Bors....sounds better?
Anyway, he's a welcome and needed source for knowledge in armor and SCA....K-

10-16-08 Well, I got home from work today and saw the list of activity. Nice work and progress. I did bring up a point or two in a discussion thread, and Kodiak has given his input on it. If anybody else has any input on the subjects addressed, hop right in there and let loose with it :). I think I'm done here for the night. I am in the inside spot tomorrow at work, so I will probably be tinkering off and on all day, tomorrow, as traffic allows.
-E.D.

10-15-08
Quick note to E.D.: Wow, thanks for all the tips and the calendar :) I can see it.

Just wanted to make a couple of notes here, firstly being that I'll (and I hope "we") will try to keep this calendar at the top, it's a great reminder on our deadlines.

Secondly, I wanted to say that most of my work/nagging will be done on the weekends, school and all. Just had the most annoying day ever with Pre-SAT's, the whole school had to take them.

Also, if anyone needs to shoot me an e-mail, that is my primary form of communication, trying to get something to me here is just hectic. My e-mail address is my name, caleb.wellauer@gmail.com

10-14-08
Looks like a day was skipped. No news is good news? :)

Anyway, we've been making some progress and doing some learning about the tools we have available here. We've got a few good discussions going about what directions we think we ought to take with a few different things, so check out the Discussion Forum when you get a chance.

I think I'm going to try to keep a list of little things that we can do with the tools we have available here. For instance, one thing that the tools here seem to lack is an official way to add a horizontal division (a horizontal rule, or <hr> for those who have some HTML knowledge) simply. One workaround is to create a one cell table (1 row by 1 column) and click the "fit to page" button. Edit the table cell and put either a top or bottom border on it, depending on the spacing you want (I'm using the bottom border, on this page). You can also adjust spacing by selecting the table and changing the font size. The smaller the font size, the lower the table height, the less whitespace between the selected border and the nearest text.

I've also added the Google calendar widget up here to the left on the front page. Let me know if that's a useful addition or not.
Edit: Okay, I took it off, again. Evidently, it would only display for me, since it was from my account. I do think I want to look into a usable calendar widget for the front page, though, unless somebody has any objections.
Edit again: May be able to use Google calendar after all, looking into it now.
Edit once more: Can y'all see the calendar? Do you think that's a useful addition?

I think that's my words for now. I hope I didn't step on anybody's toes by doing this. I'll be around.
-Vince, aka Elemental Dragon

10-12-08 by NinjaTails-
Hey all! Just wanted to make the announcement that I'm going to just suck it up and join this site, even if it hurts my ego :P Right now I'm just going around and trying to make everything look good... I love this theme, Kodiak, I think it's a keeper. I'm guessing that this daily thing should be done by an admin every day... Me, Kodiak or MusicMan (who has been through all this and has been so patient with me =]) and whoever else ends up being a leader in the end. I'm going to try my hardest to keep a backup on my own computer, and I may upload said backup to my own server so that people can look at what I do/don't have (it will just be in a ZIP file) and also just as an added backup in case my archive gets deleted or I lose my lappy (I hope not!!!)

Thanks for all your patience guys! I hope we can really get the ball rolling this time.

Note: So far it looks like Wetpaint has chosen Georgia font as its default. Just try and keep it that way, pages with a bazillion fonts look WEIRD! We'll save our fancy fonts for PDF versions =]

Sizing Your Jewelry

Sizing your jewelry is easy, correct? I have been following to some degree both your and ED's outline in the Brainstorming section. ~MM

Still working on this... It's so confusing to look back and forth and see how everything matches up. Maybe we should think about rearranging what we have so far? -NT

NT I put an alternate Table of Contents next to yours to reflect everything that you have, but just reorganized a little to reflect the structure we already have set up. That does not mean we have to keep it I just put it out for discussion. ~MM

Wow! That was a good idea, I appreciate it. It helps us see where we are compared to what we had planned. -NT

I have added to the Table of Contents what we have currently and things that either need to be or questions on what should be in the section, put in (). Please give comments and change things if you feel it would be better done another way. ~MM

 What we initially Proposed

 Preface

 Origins

Introduction

 i. The new metals can have enhanced color, strength, and corrosion resistance, some alloys may even have a new common name for example Red Brass.

Anodizing - The process of adding a colored coating to the metal.

Arbor - The piece that a rotary jeweler's saw blade is fastened to in order to provide rotation to the blade from a motor. [Hmmm...I think it may need a bit more work. -E.D.]

Aspect Ratio (AR) - The mathematical relationship between the inside diameter (ID) of a ring and the diameter of the wire (WD) used to make the ring. AR=ID/WD.

AWG - American Wire Gage, used primarily for non-ferrous metals, metals without iron in them.

 B
Burr - A small sliver or splinter of metal material left on a ring end after saw cutting rings. Burrs can either be
aligned straight across the cut, or be bent away from the cut. Burrs are typically caused when saw cutting
and the ring breaks off the coil just before the saw finishes cutting through the ring.

Burring - The act of a saw creating burrs.

 C
Coil - A length of wire that has been wrapped around a mandrel to form a compressed spring shape.
Contraction - The act of taking away rings to a piece in order to make it smaller while not changing what was made before.
 D

 E
Expansion - The act of adding rings to a piece in order to make it larger while not changing what was made before.

 F
Ferrous - Wire that does not contain iron such as Copper, Silver, Gold, Brass...

 G
Gauge - A number that represents a specific diameter of wire. The two most common gauge systems are
American Wire Gauge (AWG) and Imperial Standard Wire Gauge (SWG).

 H

 I
Ideal Aspect Ratio (IAR) - The aspect ratio that results from using standard data instead of measured data in the AR formula. Standard data is typically industry standard wire sizes and mandrel diameters.

 J
Jumprings - The name commonly used by jewelers to identify a ring used to make maille or other jewelry.
(see also ring)

 K
Kerf - The space left by cutting the rings. The distance between the two ends of the rings.
Kusari - is Japanese meaning chain. Commonly found in combination with other words.

 L

 M
Macula - Latin meaning net, believed that this is the root word for maille.
Mandrel - A rod that is used to wrap wire around to form coils or springs before cutting them into rings.

 N
Nippers - A general term for any hand held cutters used in cutting coils into rings. Terms for specific types include bolt cutters, flush cutters, end nippers, and diagonal pliers, to name a few.
Non-ferrous - wire that contains iron in it's composition such as Galvanized Steel, Mild Steel, Stainless Steel, Inconel...

 O

 P

 Q

 R
Ring - The wire structure used to make maille. (see also Jumpring)

 S
Springback - The tendency of newly coiled wire to try to return to it's original shape. This results in rings that are slightly larger than a given mandrel size. The stronger the wire the more springback will occur.

SWG - Imperial Standard Wire Gage, used primarily for ferrous metals, metals with iron in them.

 T
Temper - The strength of a wire, or how easy it is to work compared to other tempers of the same metal. Soft, quarter hard, half hard, hard extra hard, spring, extra spring are typical descriptors from easiest to work to hardest to work. Not all metals will be available in all tempers.

 U

 V

 W

 X

 Y

 Z

I am not sure what we would want to put here, but I thought I would start with just some of the words I know I had to look up when starting. - MM

Yep. Good idea. I did rename the page, but yep, this will be useful. -E.D.

Now I just need to get it out of the Team Members folder. Darn I will get the hang of this yet! - MM

I flipped it over under Rough Draft, if that is alright. -E.D.

Sorry, I moved it to the bottom before I saw you did that. I like your spot better I will move it back. - MM

How bout a 2 column table format? Better for a booklet page.K-

I don't know. What exactly did you have in mind? I kind of have a hard time picturing any sort of term+definition list as 2 column if what you are envisioning is term in one column, definition in second column. Part of my issue, I guess, is I'm also not quite picturing the general booklet format. -E.D.

I really like this full page version for the book. What would happen if we created a separate Glossary for the booklet? Once we have a little more content in the larger book as a whole I was planning to transport and edit it into the appropriate booklets. Then after we have the information in the booklets that we feel is appropriate to the respective booklet we can create a glossary that only has terms in it that relate to that booklet. Already I think we would have terms in the current glossary that would not really apply to a beginners booklet home or teachers edition. I was thinking that with all the new people I/someone should put in the list of pages the two types of booklets that we have discussed to this point. Little off topic... So I would say keep this glossary the same and create 2 column glossaries for the booklets - MM

European Weaves

Here are a few examples of European weaves, some theory into what makes them European weaves / how to identify them, as well as technical information that could be helpful if you want to try any of them out.

Weave Characteristics:
Technical info: AR's and possible ring sizes for the most common European weaves as well as pictures of each weave

Hybrid Weaves

Weave Characteristics: Hybrid weaves display the characteristics of two or more families.

Spiral Weaves

Weave Characteristics:

Persian Weaves

Weave Characteristics:

Japanese Weaves

Weave Characteristics: The Japanese weaves are characterized by the use of 90 degree ring interactions.
